WASHINGTON, D.C. (WWNY) - North country congresswoman Elise Stefanik was one of the 197 Republicans who voted against impeaching President Trump Wednesday.
The vote passed 232-197, with 10 Republicans breaking with their party to join the Democrats. No Democrat opposed impeachment.
In a statement, Stefanik - an ally of President Trump - said she is “vehemently opposed to the snap impeachment of President Trump. It is a partisan ploy with no basis in the Constitution.
“The Democrats’ decision to impeach the President with one week remaining in his term further fuels the divisions in the country during this very trying time.
“As Members of the United States Congress, we should focus on unifying our country by delivering solutions to the American people.”
Stefanik’s fellow Republican, John Katko, who represents the Syracuse area, was one of the Republicans who voted to impeach.
