WWNY Association Island’s new owner plans more development

TOWN OF HENDERSON, N.Y. (WWNY) - Look for more development around Association Island now that it has a new owner.

We reported last week that the island, home to an RV resort, was sold.

The new owner, Sun Communities, says it plans on developing Snowshoe Island, which is 35 acres of untouched land right down the road from Association Island.

The owner also plans on restoring some of Association Island’s older buildings.

“We plan to renovate many of the buildings on site and we’re hoping - exploring the possibility of restoring the old town hall to its original condition,” said Marco Broggio, regional vice president of sales and operations, Sun Communities.

The new owners say they are aware of concerns people may have.

When Association Island was first developed in the 1990s, some in the town of Henderson worried about the extra traffic the RV park would create.

Sun Communities says it will work with the town to address any concerns.

Meanwhile, the town’s supervisor, Edwin Glaser, says he hasn’t heard of any concerns this time around and is looking forward to the new ownership.

“We’ll have more tourists here in the summertime, our peak season and that, which will help utilize the restaurants and the stores and the facilities that the town has to offer,” he said.

Glaser says with more development and tourism, it should bring in more revenue for the town, which could be reinvested in the town’s water and sewer infrastructure.
