New coach, new era for Watertown High baseball

New Watertown baseball coach

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The abbreviated spring sports season for high schools is set to begin with games.

For the Watertown baseball team, this season will feature a new coach for the varsity squad.

Riley Moonan was scheduled to take over for Matt Covey as Watertown baseball coach last season before COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 season.

Now he gets to lead the Cyclones on the diamond and he’s looking forward to the challenge.

“Very excited to be here in Watertown,” he said. “Obviously, I’ve been playing baseball a long time, so being able to step into a varsity position is a real treat for me.

“I’m from Liverpool, N.Y. I went to Cicero-North Syracuse High School and then I went to Fairleigh Dickinson University, where I played baseball for four years and then I got my master’s at Canisius, obviously to be a phys ed teacher, so this is what led me here,” he said.

“I’m excited,” Moonan said. “We’re going to be a young team, we only have four seniors. We’re learning, we’re young -- these guys are very hungry. They work hard and that’s all I can ask for. All I ask for is that they come to show up every day to practice and work hard for me.”
