OSWEGO, New York (WWNY) - There’s a scam making its way through nearby Oswego County.

The sheriff’s office says it’s learned of a letter being mailed to residents asking for donations for the “National Drive for America’s Police and Sheriff’s Emergency Equipment Shortage Oswego, New York Area.”

The letter, from an organization called the United States Deputy Sheriff’s Association, says it’s raising money for bulletproof vests for police.

The letter says in part: “your help is urgently needed to get bulletproof vests to our police in these dangerous times, because essential equipment is sorely lacking due to state and local government budget cuts”

The sheriff’s office assures residents that they have adequate funding to buy its officers vests when they need them.

Also, the sheriff’s office has never received money from the organization and they’ve discovered that other police agencies have seen similar letters.
