Fire destroys Canton garage & heavily damages home
CANTON, New York (WWNY) - Fire broke out at a two-story home in the town of Canton Monday morning.
The blaze at 55 Meade Road started around 8 a.m.
The fire started in the garage and quickly spread to the house. Firefighters managed to stop it there but not before the home was heavily damaged.
The garage was destroyed.
Owner Lyle Newman said he was taking his two dogs out for a walk when he saw flames from the garage. No one else was home at the time.
Firefighters battled the blaze for an hour and then worked inside the home to extinguish the last of it.
“It already got a headway on us into the house. And wind wasn’t a helpful factor, blowing right toward the house,” said Shawn McGregor, Canton 1st assistant chief. “About a quarter way into the house we got it stopped and had a good knockdown from the front part of the house.”
Firefighters from Canton, Pyrites, Pierrepont, West Potsdam, and a DeGrasse/Clare/South Russell tanker responded.
