Community Rallies To Help Homeless Family Of 7

Posted: Updated:

For the last four days, Andrew Clement has watched as donations poured into a GoFundMe page he set up for the Joe and Samantha Sawyer family.

The family of seven lost their town of Rutland home to fire last Friday.

Since then, the GoFundMe page has raised more than $7,000.

"They've got to rebuild or find somewhere else to live," Clement said. "They have five kids, so nobody's life was lost but rebuilding is a tough thing to do."

Clement says he's just trying to make it a little easier on them.

He had originally hoped to raise $5,000, but bumped it up to $8,000 when he saw the response from the community.

Donations have also continued to come into the Rutland and Copenhagen fire departments, where they have been collecting food, toiletries and clothing for the family since the fire.

Clement says the fire departments have already delivered two pickup truck loads to the family.

"Christmas Eve we took them a storage trailer," Clement said. "They're quite probably crowded, so we thought we'd help them out, give them some space and let them store their things for as long as they need."

With more than $7,000 raised so far, Clement's goal of $8,000 is well within reach to give something back to a family that lost it all.
