A doctor affiliated with Canton-Potsdam Hospital was arrested Tuesday, and charged with stealing prescription pills from patients.

A press release from Potsdam village police Tuesday night said Richard F. Wessel Jr., 59, was taken into custody "following a long term investigation into the theft of prescription medication from patients occurring at the office of Dr. Wessel located at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Lawrence Avenue campus."

Wessel was "found to be in possession of 118 Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen pills for which he was not prescribed," according to the release.

Wessel was charged with five counts of petit larceny and one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance, 7th degree. He was issued appearance tickets for Town of Potsdam court on April 11.

On Canton-Potsdam Hospital's web site, Wessel is listed as a cardiologist.
