Relay For Life Kicks Off For Jefferson County

Posted: Updated:

People involved with the Jefferson County Relay For Life enjoyed their annual kickoff Wednesday night.

Relay For Life is a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The kickoff was a time to get the nearly 50 teams excited to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

This year's theme is centered on the Olympics.

7 News' Mel Busler and his wife Rose have been active with Relay for years.

Last night, Coyote Moon Vineyards presented the group with a check. It represented the proceeds from a special wine the winery created called Busler's Beauties Blush.

This year's honorary Relay For Life chairperson is Mark Mason, a well-known local musician and former TV host who's battling brain cancer. He was morning anchor for 7 News several years ago.

Mason says he wants his story to be a message of hope that highlights the large strides made in cancer treatment over the past few years.

"It's hard to beat the cancer that I have -- it grows back, it's like a weed," Mason said. "For three and a half years, I had three clean, with-no-occurance years, and then it came back -- and here we are -- but we're winning."

Jefferson County's Relay For Life has raised more than $5 million since it started 22 years ago.

This year's Relay is Friday, June 8 at Watertown's Alex Duffy Fairgrounds,

7 News is a proud sponsor.
