A fire-related death in St. Lawrence County is being described as "mysterious."

It happened Saturday afternoon at the home of 68 year old Daniel Leafe on County Route 41 in the town of Louisville.

According to Louisville Fire Chief Jeffrey Vice, Leafe was found in the garage with third-degree burns on his body from the waist down.

He said Leafe was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital.

According to Leafe's obituary, Leafe died at the Syracuse hospital Wednesday evening.

Vice said there was a woodstove in the garage, but no evidence of a fire - only ashes on the floor of the garage.

He said has never seen anything like this before and described the incident as "mysterious."

It's unclear who called for help, but Vice said Leafe's wife was at home at the time.

State police and a county fire investigator were at the scene, Vice said.

7 News reached out to state police for information. We'll update this story if we hear from troopers.

Vice said it appears the fire was accidental.

According to the obituary, Leafe operated a lawn maintenance company, doing work for many businesses and residences throughout the community.  He enjoyed puttering and tinkering around his home and garage.
