The 12th annual Polar Bear Plunge took place Saturday in Ogdensburg.
The plunge benefits the Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce and the city's volunteer rescue squad.
Early Saturday afternoon, people lined up - many of them in costume - at the Dobisky Center on Riverside Drive to dive (or belly flop) into the St. Lawrence River.
"I am going to walk the plank for you today," said Richard Bzura, as he got ready to dive.
Onlookers cheered as participants - many of them international exchange students - slipped off their shoes and hit the water.
"This is a fun event," said Sean McNamara, "because we never really know until the day of the event who's going to show up."
The event raised about $3,000 for the rescue squad and the Chamber of Commerce. They also took donations for the SPCA.
