IHC Will Not Field Football Team This FallPosted: Updated:
Immaculate Heart Central in Watertown will not field a football team this fall, according to the school's athletic director.
"It saddened me to have to inform the section (Section III) that we wouldn't be able to field a team next season," IHC Athletic Director Mike Delaney told 7 News Sports Director Mel Busler.
"It really has to do with we don't have enough players to field a team," Delaney said. "We had only about eight students returning that were our students, we have some students who are military who are leaving the area, we had some students transfer out during the school year."
"So the combination of all these factors leave us with only eight or nine athletes for football," Delaney said.
IHC considered an eight player football program, but that wasn't an option, Delaney said.
"We did consider it, but we're still in trouble with numbers even at that level," he said. "And then to have to opt out of that schedule in August wouldn't be fair to the teams or the section."
Along with the varsity football program, IHC's modified program is being suspended for the season, leaving the future of the sport at IHC very much in question.
"We're hopeful it isn't a permanent decision," Delaney said
