A Bronx, New York man was seriously injured in a one-car accident near West Carthage Thursday morning.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office identifies the driver as 29 year old Esteban Santos.

Assistant West Carthage Fire Chief Matthew Christman said the car went into a tree around 6:40 a.m. on State Route 26 in the town of Denmark near Johnson's Lumber.

Investigator Edward Amelio of the sheriff's office told 7 News Santos was on his way to Fort Drum when the accident happened.

He said a witness saw Santos trying to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone and veered off the road to avoid an oncoming tractor-trailer.

Officials said it took 43 minutes and two sets of the Jaws of Life to free Santos from the wreckage.

Santos was airlifted to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

Amelio said Santos suffered a ruptured liver and broken arms and legs.
