Saturday Sports: Red & Black Back On The Field Against Syracuse Strong

The Northeastern Football Alliance season opened Saturday night, with the Watertown Red and Black at home hosting the Syracuse Strong.

A scoreless first quarter. In the 2nd, Rashad Burns took it in from 6 yards out, Syracuse on top 7-0. Red and Black answered, Jarod Hendricks to Chriss Furr in the endzone, who takes it away from the defender. Loughlin Towles with an extra point, Red and Black tied the game at 7. Late in the 2nd quarter, Syracuse threatening, Tristan Jones comes up with a big sack of the quarterback. Tom Standnicki tried a long field goal but it went off the right upright, the game remained tied at 7 at the half. In the 3rd quarter, Conner Brown had a big defensive play for the Red and Black, the sack for a big loss. Laughlin Towles with an extra point, 14-7 Red and Black. Zach Watkins took it in though for Syarcuse with 34 seconds left in regulation: game tied at 14. In overtime, Tom Standnicki kicked a 31 yard field goal to win it. Final in overtime: Syracuse 17, Watertown 14.

In other NFA action, at Potsdam High School, the North Country Tigers hosted Ithaca. Eric Labarr put the Tigers up 6-0. Ithaca answered, it was Eric Brooks with a 31 yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 6. Garen Arnold hit Todd Sharlow, 13-6 Tigers. Ithaca answered, it was Brooks to Lester Owens. Score:14-13 Warriors. In the 3rd quarter, Arnold is sacked in the endzone, 16-13 Ithaca. Ithaca continued on to win 24-13.

South Lewis senior, Hali Ielfield's quest for a 2nd straight State Title at the State Track and Field Championships at CNS Saturday came up a bit short. Ielfield finished 2nd in the Division 2 1500 meters, losing to Caroline Timm of Our Lady of Lourdes by 9/10's of a second. Friday, Ielfield won the division 2 800 with a time of 2 minutes 11.35 seconds.

Another prestegious honor for Clarkson Lady Golden Knights senior goalie, Shea Tiley. Friday, the ECAC named Tiley with winner of the Mandi Schwartz Award as Student Athlete of the Year. Tiely was chosen from a group of 12 finalists. The award is given to a player that excels in the classroom, plays in at least half of their teams games, and demonstrates leadership on and off the ice. Tiley joins Vanessa Gagnon as the 2nd Lady Golden Knight to win the honor.
