Potsdam Sees Flurry Of Development

Two houses will be coming down and a 23,000 foot outpatient facility going up. It's the most recent expansion for Canton-Potsdam Hospital and right at its own hospital campus.

“Having a strong facility like like Canton-Potsdam right in our backyard in addition to our two colleges certainly give us a lot of nice anchors for employment and growth opportunities here in the village,” said John Morrison, Potsdam Chamber executive director.

The Potsdam planning board approved the plan for the outpatient facility last week. The 2-story building will be just off Leroy Street. People can go there for outpatient procedures formerly done in the hospital. It still needs state approval.

The outpatient facility is not the only development activity in Potsdam. There's been a flurry of interest recently from national restaurant and retail chains that want to locate along Market Street.

Harbor Freight, a chain of tool stores, just opened in the plaza north of May Road. Just south, Taco Bell opened with a drive-thru. A Five Guys burger and hot dog joint is going to locate in a lot that formerly housed the Stewart's Shop.

“We've had other chains that have started to move in and are successful here and I think, you know, you start to follow a pattern.” said Morrison.

The village planning board just last week approved the Five Guys plan with some modifications. Planning officials were happy to see a restaurant opening in the downtown area.
