The Watertown Rapids were hoping to bounce back from a doubleheader loss on Tuesday when they faced Utica Thursday at the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds.
That didn't happen.
At the start of Thursday's game, the Rapids trailed first-place Mohawk Valley by half a game in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League's Central Division.
The Blue Sox got on the board in the top of the first. Issiah Torrez hit a shot to the gap in right center that went for a double. Mohammad Hussein scored. It was 1-0 Blue Sox.
The Rapids tied the game in the bottom of the third. Bailey Lewis scored on an infield single by Mike Russell.
Utica regained the lead in the top of the fourth. L.J. Bryant scored on a Luis Deleon base hit.
The Blue Sox lead increased to 4-1 with runs by Torrez and Bryant on a Sam Punzi hit.
The Rapids rallied in the fifth to take the lead 6-4, but Utica went on to win the contest 9-8.
The Rapids host Mohawk Valley at the fairgrounds in a doubleheader Friday. Game one starts at 5 p.m.
