Barbara Webber Named Athena Award WinnerPosted: Updated:
"I'm happy to announce that they have selected Ms. Barbara Webber as the 2018 Athena Award Recipient." said Kylie Peck, president of the Greater Watertown - North Country Chamber of Commerce.
Barbara Webber has been giving back to the north country for decades.
She was an educator in the Carthage Central School District for more than 30 years. She is part of several community organizations and was the first African American woman on the Jefferson County Board of Legislators.
Despite all her achievements, Webber says she was shocked when she found out she was this year's Athena Award recipient.
"I know the recipients in the past, I've gone to the dinners, but never had any idea that I would be one of them so, but it's really an honor. I am truly humbled and honored to be receiving it," she said.
Webber follows in the footsteps of 27 other women in the north country who have received this award. Former Jefferson County District Attorney and Athena Award recipient herself, Cindy Intschert, was one of the women who nominated Webber.
"She has supported and mentored girls and women and men from elementary school to commanding generals and their families," said Intschert.
Webber will be presented with the award at a dinner on September 6.
