Free Backpacks, Supplies Handed Out

The Watertown Urban Mission began its annual back to school backpack distribution Wednesday.

Children had their pick of a backpack filled with school supplies that match their grade level. The backpacks were donated by local churches, businesses, and people in the community.

Right now about 600 backpacks are ready to go, but more donations are accepted anytime at the Urban Mission.

Last year 1,100 backpacks were distributed to help those who are struggling to pay back-to-school expenses.

"I'm in 6th grade and I just wanted to get a book bag for me, just for me and my sisters, get a new book bag." said Brenden Jenkins, Watertown resident.

The backpack distribution is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Friday.

Backpacks can be picked up and donations can be dropped off at 247 Factory Street in Watertown.
