JCC Offering Free Retail Sales TrainingPosted: Updated:
Jefferson Community College is offering free retail sales training on campus from September 10 through September 28. Classes will be held on JCC's campus Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It's a three week program funded by a grant from the New York Department of Labor.
"We are really wanting to work with individuals who are either in a career that they are unhappy with or they don't have a career path," said Kathleen Morris, director of community services at JCC.
The training program covers areas of retail sales, food service as well as hotels and hospitality. The instructors are retail managers from the area.
"Well, they will really see what retail is all about. It's not just about showing up to work, standing there and folding a t-shirt. We do so much more than fold t-shirts," said Kristin Misercola, general manager at Old Navy and adjunct instructor for the NRF retail course.
The program is geared toward those seeking entry-level positions in the retail industry, or those with retail experience who would like to advance their skills and add a line to their resume.
"The long term goal here is retail management, so it's a career goal," said Morris.
Participants who complete the course will earn credentials from the National Retail Federation. The program is supported and recognized by sponsors that include Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot and Target.
"The feedback we have gotten from the managers of the local stores who are sponsors of the NRF program are very excited, 'we will be coming at the end of the class, we will be interviewing people," said Morris.
