Deployment Over, Soldiers Welcomed Home From Iraq

Boots are back on the ground at Fort Drum. The last of the 10th Mountain Division soldiers have returned from Iraq.

Soldiers from the headquarters and headquarters battalion were welcomed home by their friends and families Thursday night.

They are returning from a seven-month deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

It was a special day for Christopher Hoffman. He got to meet his son Keegan for the first time. Keegan was born on Memorial Day.

"Words can't explain it," Hoffman said. "That's the biggest thing I was looking forward to coming home was just seeing my kids and everything like that."

Of the mission, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Eric Harrelson said he's "very happy with actually the progress the Iraqis have made. It's been 10 years since I've been there so just to see how far they have advanced in 10 years, it really does my heart good."

About 500 soldiers were deployed.
