A New Way To Kill Germs In School

Posted: Updated:

The Watertown City School District has a new way to tackle germs.

Meet Protexus, an electrostatic sprayer designed to kill germs, cold flu virus, e-coli - anything harmful to students and staff.

It's easy to use. Handlers put a chlorinated tablet into the attached water bottle, pull the trigger, and spray.

Schools officials say it's a proactive approach to cleaning, not a replacement for traditional cleaning methods or crews.

"There's a light on the front of it that electro-statically charges the chlorinated water on its way out, which positively charges it. Everything on the desktop would be negatively charged, so it attracts to whatever is on the surface. With a ten minute dwell time, it should kill anything," said Jason Compo, WCSD building and grounds manager.

The school district only has one sprayer now, but officials hope to eventually have one for every school building.
