Saturday Sports: North Country Sports Hall of Fame Inductions & High School Sports

The North Country Sports Hall of Fame held it's 2nd annual induction ceremony at the Ramada Inn in Watertown Saturday night.

A stellar class inducted this year led by former Gouverneur and Rutgers star, and N.F.L. veteran Brian Leonard. Three coaches were also inducted. General Brown football coach, Steve Fisher and former basketball coaches Bob Giordano and Lew Kibling. Also, representing her son, Craig Conroy, Mary Anne Stone Conroy was present. Baseball lifer George Kissell, football star Charlie Gogolak, and former Massena coach Mike Nicholas also inducted along with the 1988 and 93 Copenhagen Girls' Soccer Teams.

The Gouverneur Wildcats looking to remain undefeated Saturday as they traveled to Massena to face the Red Raiders in Section 10 play. In the 1st quarter, Garrison Gonea takes a hand off and goes 40 yards for a touchdown, Wildcats go on top 7-0. It's Gonea again, this time going outside for a 25 yard touchdown run. Score: 13-0 Wildcats. Peyton Schmitt adds to the lead with a 4 yard touchdown run, 20-0 Gouverneur. Gouverneur went on to win 52-0.

A Section 10- Section 3 matchup in Canton as the Golden Bears hosted Lowville. It was all Red Raiders in this one. Lowville would jump out to a 32-6 halftime lead and never look back. Lowville quarterback, Chad Bach, would toss 3 touchdown passes. Gavin McCauley had 2 touchdown receptions and Issac and Chase Lyndaker added touchdown runs as the Red Raiders remained undefeated. Final score: 40-6 Lowville.

In Section 3 football from Beaver Falls, the Beavers hosted Cato Meridian. Cato Meridian gets on the board first, Joshua Lovejoy finds pay dirt from a couple of yards out. Score: 6-0 Cato Meridian. The Beavers answered as Sam Bush hit Colin Nofsure with a swing pass and Nofsure finds some open field to the end zone, tying the game at 6. Cato Meridian continued on to win 28-6.

Boys' non-league soccer from Dexter Saturday morning as General Brown hosted Salmon River. One goal in the first half, Issiah Collins dents the back of the net off a scramble in front. Score: 1-0 Lions. Morgan Milkowitch added a 2nd half goal to break a 1 all tie and the lions qualify for sectionals with a 2-1 win.

In men's college soccer, St. Lawrence at R.I.T. Charlton Kelly would score in the 1st half and Jethro Dede added a 2nd half goal as St. Lawrence shut out R.I.T. 2-0. With the win, the Saints move to 6-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Liberty League play.

On the ice, Skylar Podvey' s goal with 1 second left in overtime would break a scoreless tie and give the 10th ranked Lady Saints of St. Lawrence a 1-0 win over U.N.H. at Appleton Arena Saturday afternoon.

In exhibition hockey from Appleton Arena, St. Lawrence hosted the University of Ottawa. Keenan Suthers would score with 2 minutes left in the game, but that would be the lone Saints goal as they fell to the University of Ottawa 3-1.
