SUV Found In Oswegatchie River Was StolenPosted: Updated:
The Kia Sorento SUV found in the Oswegatchie River Wednesday was reported stolen that morning in Yorkville, New York, according to police there.
It was stolen sometime overnight on Wilcox Street, said Yorkville Officer Patrick Collea. The keys had been left in the vehicle.
Collea said police there often find stolen cars in nearby Utica, so he was surprised to get a call from state police saying the car had been found in St. Lawrence County.
The vehicle was spotted, with its engine running, by a passerby on River Road in the town of Oswegatchie about 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Neighbors along the road said the east bank of the river at that location is a popular place for teens to party.
Sources also tell 7 News a piece of wood was stuck between the front seat and the gas pedal, explaining why it was still running while half-submerged in the river.
No driver was located. State police interviewed neighbors along River Road, asking if they had seen anything.
River Road is a narrow paved road that runs right along the river bank.
