A Familiar Ride For GB, Lions Prepare For Trip To DomePosted: Updated:
Playing for a sectional football title at the Carrier Dome is a familiar position for the General Brown Lions.
Coach Doug Black's Lions advanced to the Section 3 Class C final with a convincing 57-28 win over Utica Notre Dame.
They take on Holland Patent for the title on Saturday.
The Lions have won four straight after suffering their only loss of the season to OFA in non-league play.
"The key, I think every week we try to get better and this team from week one up until now has improved every week and fixed little things that we were doing wrong," Black said, "so it's definitely been a big improvement this year."
The 8-1 Lions will face their toughest test to date as they square off against undefeated and top-seed Holland Patent with a trip to the states on the line.
"They're an excellent football team," Black said. "Nobody's really come close to them this year, they're big and physical, very huge offensive line and a really good running back in the backfield, so we're going to have our hands full."
The Lions face a Golden Knights team that has outscored their opponents 342-97 this season, averaging 38 points a game while only giving up an average of 10 points a contest.
The Lions, though, have been hard at work preparing a game plan to counter Holland Patent on both sides of the ball.
You know, watching a lot of film, work hard all week," player Jake Heller said. "We understand that come into the right mindset, we've been here in the past a few years and we understand what it takes to get to the Dome and obviously we need to focus on winning."
"We're pretty excited," Donnell Haggard said. "We've been putting a lot of work in all week, you know, film preparation, just mentally getting ready and we're excited."
The Lions and the Golden Knights square off at noon.
