Faster Internet Coming To St. Lawrence CountyPosted: Updated:
Faster internet is coming to parts of St. Lawrence County.
"We are getting into the modern world and it's about time. I'm very excited," said Mike Crowe, who owns property in Russell.
Wednesday, TDS Telecom launched its upgraded broadband service, which is available in Edwards, Hermon, DeKalb, and Russell.
"We offered a DSL service and we could offer 25 megabytes, maybe 50 megabytes in some locations, but now we can offer one gig," said Scott Brooks, state government affairs manager, TDS Telecom.
That's quite a jump, as one gigabyte is equal to 1,000 megabytes.
The company was able to upgrade its service because of the state's $500 million investment to achieve statewide broadband access.
Residents say this upgraded service will now put them on par with larger cities.
"If anybody wants to do any kind of commerce, you have to have fast broadband. You can't do it on what we have currently," said Crowe.
Lenore Zaunere is the historian for the town of Hermon. She says faster internet will help her when she works from home.
"I get phone calls from people all over the country who may have lived here or had ancestors that lived here and they would like to know about something in particular. So, I do a lot of research at home and I'm sure the fiberoptic connection will help me to be more efficient about it," she said.
The first customers that open an account could get the new service as early as this week.
