Viggo Mortensen Receives Golden Globe Nomination
It comes as no surprise, that Watertown native Viggo Mortensen received a Golden Globe Award nomination, his fourth, for his excellent performance in Green Book (Best Actor in a Comedy, or Musical film). The nominations were announced in a live telecast, early this morning that was streamed on the Golden Globe web page. Viggo was previously nominated for Eastern Promises (2007), A Dangerous Method (2011) and Captain Fantastic (2016). In Green Book, Viggo plays real life Tony Lip (Frank Anthony Vallelonga) who in 1962, drove famed concert pianist, Dr. Don Shirley for his music tour in the Jim Crow Deep South. Oscar Winner (Moonlight) Mahershala Ali plays Dr. Shirley and was also nominated (in the supporting category) for his performance in Green Book. The film was also nominated for Best Comedy film, best screenplay and best director for Peter Farrelly. This puts the film and Mr. Mortensen in a great position, when the Oscar Nominations are announced next month.
According to the Wrap, Viggo was quoted as “I am grateful to the HFPA for this recognition, and proudly share it with Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini and the rest of ‘Green Book’s’ wonderful cast. Thank you, Peter Farrelly, for making a movie that inspires hope and compassion. By inviting audiences to laugh and be genuinely moved, and also to think profoundly about our society’s past and present, you have given us a story equal to the best work of Frank Capra and Preston Sturges.”
The Golden Globe Awards Ceremony will broadcast, on January 6 on NBC at 8pm. The Golden Globes which are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Agency announced a new award this year. Because of the new golden age of television, they will present a lifetime achievement award for excellence in television, similar to the Cecil B. Mille Award for film.
As of this posting, December 6, 2018, Green Book hasn’t arrived in theaters in Watertown, or theaters in St. Lawrence or Lewis County. I saw the film in Syracuse-Click here for my Review.
