Saturday Sports: Route 11 Rivalry; Clarkson Women's Hockey Beats St. Lawrence

It was part 2 of the Route 11 rivalry between the Clarkson and St. Lawrence women's hockey teams taking place Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena. The Lady Saints looking to bounce back from a 4-0 shutout loss Friday at home. Rachel Smith got the scoring underway on a breakaway, putting St. Lawrence on top 1-0. Clarkson tied it up when Elizabeth Giguere tipped in Lauren Gabel's shot. Then it was Morgan Helgeson off the feed from Kristy PidgeonClarkson on top 2-1. Then it was Clarkson on a power play as Kelly Mariani dented the back of the net. Final score: 3-1 Clarkson.

The men's late game saw the Golden Knights gain some revenge on their rivals from down Route 11. Scoreless in the 2nd, Jere Astream ripped one just under the crossbar, giving Clarkson a 1-0 lead. In the middle of the 3rd period, Devin Brousseau hit one off the crossbar, increasing the Golden Knights lead to 2-0. Clarkson continued on to blank St. Lawrence 3-0.

A big early season Frontier League Girls' Basketball matchup in Adams Saturday afternoon as the South Jeff Lady Spartans hosted Indian River. In the 2nd quarter, Taylor Scoville hits the baseline jumper: South Jeff up 27-4. Then it was Scoville with the board and bucket: 29-6 South Jeff. Indian River answered as Adiren Lamora gets the bounce on the jumper. Score: 29-8 South Jeff. Off the steal, Megan Whitley lays in 2, 38-14 South Jeff. Then it was Jackie Piddock hard to the tin for 2 and she's fouled. South Jeff beats Indian River 77-53.

In the early game in Adams, the South Jeff Boys hosted Holland Patent in a non league contest. In the 1st quarter, Caden Lucas drills a 3 pointer, tying the game at 17. Then it was Lucas to Colden Montague who buries the jumper: Spartans down 1. In the 2nd quarter, Hunter Roberts gets loose down low for the bucket. Spartans down 9. Then it was Jackson Worden with a back door cut for the hoop, but South Jeff falls to Holland Patent 81-45.

In men's college basketball from Brockport, the SUNY Potsdam Bears took on BrockportJaquan Thomas had 19, Danny Desol Lowrey added 11 and Nosa Onabar chipped in with 10 as SUNY Potsdam lost to SUNY Brockport 78-63. The loss drops SUNY Potsdam to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in SUNYAC play.

In women's college basketball, SUNY Potsdam was on the road facing SUNY BrockportDevyn Elliott led 4 Lady Bears in double figures with 22 points. Diamon Hunter added 19, Naya Walters chipped in with 16 and O.F.A. product Riley Luckie scored 13 as SUNY Potsdam snapped a 3 game skid and closed out the 1st semester on a winning note. SUNY Potsdam beat SUNY Brockport 81-67
