Power Authority Tries To Power Up Tourism In St. Lawrence County

Waddington and Massena land major fishing tournaments. But can other communities replicate that success and with other forms of recreation? St. Lawrence County is about to find out.

“Bringing more competitive running races or obstacle races, as well as road cycling. There's potential for something maybe with ATVs, snowmobile riding,” said Brooke Rouse, St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce executive director.

The New York Power Authority has granted the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce $220,000. It will help fund a new tourism and events division at the chamber.

“Our hope is that if there are enough events with enough people that it will help to feed demand for a variety of businesses from lodging to retail to restaurants,” said Rouse.

The chamber wants to put $1.1 million into the effort over three years. Fishing tourneys in Waddington and Massena have so far led the way.

“The buzz that's created from these tournaments is something that's really going to energize the area because people are going to want to come where they see all these tournaments coming,” said Don Meissner, Massena fishing director.

Many had doubts when the first Bassmaster Elite Tournament was proposed for Waddington. It's now a staple of the summer scene.
