Fire Destroys Town of Pierrepont Home

Fire destroyed a home in the Town of Pierrepont Tuesday.

The blaze broke out just after noon at 255 Wilson Road.

Officials say the homeowner, Lorenz Tabacaru, was found in shock down the road after escaping the flames.

Tabacaru had apparently tried to fight the fire himself before hopping in his car to find someone with a phone to call emergency crews.  His car went off the road a short distance from the home, so Tabacaru made his way to an intersection on foot, flagging down a passer-by.  He was later taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Fire officials say they never had a chance to save the home.

“It was fully involved at that time -- the fire was coming out all the windows,” Pierrepont Fire Chief Peter Hoyt said. “There was a person at home when it started -- he didn't have insurance.”

Firefighters found one dog alive outside the house but others are believed to have been inside. The cause is under investigation.

The Red Cross has been contacted to provide assistance to the homeowner.
