Saturday Sports: Thousand Islands Beats Hammond On The Hardwood

The Watertown Savings Bank's Holiday Jamfest closed out Saturday at Jefferson Community College with boys and girls varsity contests on tap at the McVean Athletic Center.

The boys' contest, a Frontier League - N.A.C. showdown as the Thousand Islands Vikings squared off against Hammond. In the 1st quarter, John Boland lays in 2 on the break, Hammond up by 4. Thousand Islands answered as Thorne Matthews knifed his way through the lane for the bucket: Vikings down 2. Then it was Joey Melfi from the top of the arc for the trifecta, Vikings on top by 3. Melfi hits the pullup in the paint, increasing the Thousand Islands lead to 6. Jakob McQueer countered for hammond down low and the Vikings beat Hammond 65-53.

Saturday afternoon in Dexter was a boys' Frontier League battle as General Brown hosted South Lewis. In the 1st quarter, it was Carter Rosbrook with a strong move inside, putting the Lions up 2. Off a steal it was Rosbrook throwing down 2, putting the Lions up by another 5. Off a miss, it's Rosbrook again. This time with a rebound and putback. Score: 7-0 General Brown. The Falcons counter as Sam Arrigo hits a floater down low, South Lewis down 5. Bryce Johnson spots up and hits 3 from the corner putting the Lions up 8. Cory Millard banks 2 off the glass but South Lewis falls to General Brown 72-40.

At J.C.C. Saturday, a girls' basketball battle as Harrisville met Lyme in the Watertown Savings Bank's Holiday Jamfest. In the 2nd quarter, Mackenzie Briggs goes baseline for a hoop. Score: 24-9 Harrisville. Then it was Alana Luther spotting up and burying 3 points, 27-9 Harrisville. Harlie Moore finished off a fast break with a layin, putting Harrisville up by 20. Marissa Walker lays in 2 down low for Lyme but Harrisville holds on to beat Lyme 55-45.

In men's college basketball from Canton, St. Lawrence hosted Vassar. It was Adaleke Karera for 2. Then Ben Crawford drove the lane for a bucket. Kyle Capps drilled a 3 pointer for Vassar. Chris Miner answered with the pump fake, bucket and he was fouled. Luke Hicks hit a 3 pointer as St. Lawrence beat Vassar 70-62.

In women's college basketball, St. Lawrence also hosting Vassar. Maddie Leong buries a 3 pointer and Katie Frederick answered for the Lady Saints. Gara Gilooly drives the lane for the layin. Dylan Watkiss finished the break for St. Lawrence and Erin Cumler slashed to the bucket but St. Lawrence falls to Vassar 71-63.

The Clarkson Lady Golden Knights met Northeastern in the Friendship Series in Belfast, Northern Ireland Saturday. Loren Gabel and Elizabeth Gigiere would give Clarkson a 2-0 lead, but Northeastern would score 3 goals in the last 1:31 of the 2nd period to go on top 3-2. Kelly Mariani would tie it in the 3rd and that's the way this game would end, in a 3-3 overtime tie.

In Federal Hockey League action from the Watertown Fairgrounds, the Wolves hosted first place Carolina. Less than a minute in, the Wolves Chase Tippin and Carolina's Joe Canaan get into it, both players receive 5 minute majors. Later in the 1st, it was Canaan and the Wolves' Christina Whitcomb mixing it up. Canaan would get a game misconduct later in the 1st period. This a battle of the goalies, the Wolves Christopher Marsillo with 32 saves through 2 periods. All the scoring in the 3rd period as Carolina would snap the Wolves 4 game win streak with a 5-1 win. Tyler Yurich with the Wolves lone goal.
