If you were mayor of your city or village... what would you do?

Eighth graders across the state have the chance to answer that question.

The New York State Conference of Mayors is running its "If I were Mayor, I would...." essay contest.

The winner will get a cash prize and a trip to Cooperstown.

Watertown Mayor Joe Butler Jr. is urging local students to show off their writing skills.

"It's about getting young children involved with their local government to help educate them on thing sthat can be done to make their city better. I think it's a great initiative on the Conference of Mayors' part," Butler said.

The deadline for the contest is Monday, March 6.
