The Canton Free Library lost hundreds of children's books ruined by water during last week's thaw.
The water cascaded down through air conditioning vents in the children's rooms. 13,000 undamaged books are now stored in the meeting room. The culprit seems to have been a failure of roof drains.
It forced the library to cancel children's programs this week.
“There certainly was a lot of water. We lost about 400 books. And damaged some shelving. And it's been a major cleanup effort.” said Emily Hastings, director of Canton Free Library, "The kids are usually a little sad, because they come in ready to get their books, and you can kind of see their faces fall a little bit.”
The good news is children's programs start up again Monday. Donations are being accepted through the library's website or by check.
