When Weather Gets Bad, Town Highway Crew Hits The Road

Posted: Updated:

If it's snowing or icy in the town of Cape Vincent, Department of Public Works trucks are out salting and clearing the roads to make sure drivers stay safe.

"Road conditions are very poor," the DPW's Tom Martilotta said Wednesday night. "Lot of freezing rain, the roads are glazed over."

Martilotta has worked for the town of Cape Vincent for 14 winter seasons. He says so far, this one is noteworthy.

Martilotta and his crew members spent the day salting.

"Full force, all five trucks, all day since noontime," he said. "Just coming in now to get a break."

Even when roads are salted properly, parking lots are a different story. They were completed covered in ice Wednesday night.

"We've been out all day," Martilotta said. "If you can, stay home. Stay off the roads. And if you do see, give them some room especially on the intersections. It's just a safety issue."

Cape Vincent DPW drivers expected to be back on the roads at 4 a.m.
