Disabled Persons Action Organization and longtime channel 7 employee Joe Rich was honored Thursday night,
Rich was presented the annual Israel A. Shapiro citizenship award at a dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn in Watertown.
Rich was an anchor and reporter at channel 7 from the late '60s until 1980.
He began the DPAO in 1974 while working for 7 News when he began raising money for a 12-year-old boy who became disabled during a hunting accident after the boy's mother called Rich asking for help.
Since then, through the organization, Rich has helped hundreds of disabled people throughout the north country lead more fulfilling lives.
He says he's humbled to receive the award.
"I honestly feel it's a little bit out of my league and I mean that because I heard the people who are getting the award and who have gotten the award in the past," Rich said,
Past award winners were at the dinner and posed together for a picture before dinner.
