Watertown Woman Convicted In Biting Assault

Posted: Updated:

A Watertown woman was convicted in federal court Thursday of biting a Border Patrol agent in 2017.

Thirty-four year old Catherine Melhuish, a Canadian citizen and permanent U.S. resident, was accused of assaulting a federal officer. She was found guilty after a four-day jury trial in U.S. District Court in Albany.

Melhuish bit a Border Patrol agent's hand when he stopped her while she was walking in dark clothing on State Route 37 near the U.S.-Canadian border in St. Lawrence County in September 2017.

Melhuish became agitated after the agent touched her hand when he reached out to steady the identification she held out for him. That's when she spit in the agent’s face and bit him.

Her sentencing is scheduled for February 19.
