Bill Would Add More Holiday To School Calendar

Posted: Updated:

School districts may be allowed to add more religious holidays to the academic year.

A state Senate bill would allow schools to close on six more religious holidays - two Islamic, two Hindu, one Sikh, and the Christian Good Friday.

The bill would allow the new holidays at schools where at least 7.5 percent of the student population is of that particular faith.

Under the proposal, no current holidays would be eliminated if the population is under 7.5 percent in a district.
