Massena Woman Indicted In 5 Year Old Grandson's DeathPosted: Updated:
A Massena woman has been indicted in connection with the February 2017 death of her five year old grandson in a house fire.
A St. Lawrence County grand jury handed up the following charges against Shari Caza:
- criminally negligent homicide
- endangering the welfare of a child
- aggravated family offense
- criminal contempt
Officials with the county sheriff's department said Caza put her grandson, Aiden Riley, to bed in an upstairs bedroom at her home at 2224 State Route 420 on February 22, 2017
They said the fire broke out a short time later in the upstairs hallway a few feet away from the child's bedroom; the door was locked from the outside and could not be opened from the inside, which is why Caza was charged.
According to detectives, there's no evidence the boy tried to get out of the room.
The child was taken to Massena Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators said an autopsy showed smoke inhalation caused the death.
Caza was originally charged in September 2017 with a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child.
