Fire Leaves Family Of 7 Homeless

Posted: Updated:

Two adults and five children were not home when fire broke out Thursday afternoon in a farmhouse at 88 Welch Road in the town of Gouverneur.

Firefighters arrived to find the back end engulfed in flames.

High winds drove the fire forward despite volunteers' best efforts. Three dogs died in the blaze.

The father of homeowner Jeremy Roberts on Friday said he arrived not long after it started.

“This blackened end of the house here was just flaming and smoking on the right hand side and then it very quickly went right up through the bedroom and this end became fully engulfed,” said Arnold Roberts. “The wind, like it is today, was brutally just blowing and blowing. And it just made its way throughout the house and the firefighters did a valiant job trying to save it. But they just simply couldn't get ahead of it.”

There are efforts online to raise money for the Roberts family.
