A building in Watertown appears to be a total loss after a fire earlier Sunday evening.

Watertown and Fort Drum firefighters responded to a steel building on Water Street a little after 5:30 p.m.

The building is owned by Metal Man Services, which leases it to Shred Con, a paper shredding company.

There were paper supplies, fork trucks, processing equipment and a fuel oil tank inside the building.

Watertown Fire Chief Dale Herman said equipment suffered severe heat and water damage.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

"Shred Con had some workers in the building about a half hour to an hour before the fire was discovered," Herman said. "Our police department and our fire investigators will want to get statements from them as to what they were doing."

There were no injuries.

As of Sunday night, the section of Water Street in front of the building had limited access and was expected to open back up by Monday morning.
