2 North Country Murder Trials ResumePosted: Updated:
A Jefferson County murder trial will resume with a second day of testimony at the same time jury selection continues for a separate murder trial in St. Lawrence County Court.
A jury was seated in less than a day in the trial of Justin Walters, who's accused of shooting and killing his wife, Nichole Walters, and state Trooper Joel Davis in July 2017.
Several witnesses took the stand Tuesday, including Rebecca Finkle, who lived on the Walters' Theresa property and was there the night Nichole Walters and Davis were killed.
But in Canton no jurors were seated Tuesday in a full day of jury selection in the murder trial of Christopher Hebert, who's accused of killing Tracy Yekel in 2014 and dumping her body in the Massena Industrial Park.
Thirty-nine out of 70 prospective jurors were excused for various reasons Tuesday. Thirty-one returned to court Wednesday morning to be questioned by the judge and lawyers to see who may be seated. Another 90 prospective jurors are scheduled to go to the courthouse at noon.
That trial is expected to take several weeks.
By contrast, the judge in Walters' trial told jurors he expects to be done next week. Prosecutors say they expect to call about 20 witnesses. The defense hopes to prove Walters was not in his right mind when he pulled the trigger.
