A former commander of Fort Drum's 10th Mountain Division and his wife died in an apparent murder-suicide in Georgia on April 1.

According to the Chatham County Police Department, the bodies of 74 year old Thomas Burnette and his 78 year old wife, Susan, were discovered in their home in the Southbridge neighborhood of Savannah.

Police had been called to the home to do a welfare check. News reports said the Burnette’s daughter called police to do the welfare check after not being able to get in touch with her parents.

Preliminary findings indicated the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide.

According to news reports, a pistol was found in Thomas’ hand.

Major General Thomas Burnette served as 10th Mountain Division commander from 1995 to 1997.

He retired as a lieutenant general in 2001.
