Friday Sports: Watertown Wolves Look To Defend Title In Playoffs

Playoff hockey was the name of the game in the north country Friday night as the Watertown Wolves faced the Elmira Enforcers at the Alex Duffy Arena.

The 3rd seeded Wolves began defense of their Federal Hockey League title against 2nd seed Elmira.

The Wolves strike first at 4:25 in. Former Enforcer, Tyler Prendergast dented the back of the net, putting Watertown on top 1-0. A little over a minute later, Elmira tied it up as Sean Reynolds splits the pipes. It was a power play tally knotting the score at 1.

Under 2 minutes later, the Enforcers grab their first lead as Mitch Atkins connects on the doorstep. Elmira goes on top 2-1. With 1:24 left in the 1st, the Wolves tie it up as Prendergast scores his 2nd goal of the game. The game at 2 all after 1 period.

In the 2nd period, Elmira appears to take the lead on Ahmed Mahfouz's tally, but the officials wave off the goal, keeping the score tied at 2.

Tempers flare shortly after that with Elmira tagged with 3 two minute penalties and the Wolves' Christian Whitcomb getting a 5 minute major and a game misconduct.

The wolves take advantage and get a power play tally as Tyler Gjurich sticks home a loose puck, putting Watertown on top 3-2. Midway through the 2nd period, the Wolves add to their lead. Gjurich scores his 2nd goal of the game to put the Wolves up 4-2.

The early lead wouldn't be enough for the Wolves as Elmira beats then 5-4.
