Youngsters Learn The Pleasure Of PaintingPosted: Updated:
This is not children's play. It's serious stuff. Local artist and master painter Wilson Bickford gives Gouverneur 4th graders the basics on drawing and mixing paints.
“We use the bottom of these to mix the blue and the white together. So we can make the waterfalls curving. And we got the bottom ... is the little pool. And the white things above the bottom are the little splash marks,” said Landyn Rider, 4th grader.
It's just once a year and everyone gets to dabbing and brushing away as fast as they can. Bickford brings the aprons and the kids bring the passion.
“The thing about art is you get the paint and all that. You get to do different stuff 'cause you really don't know what's up next to do,” said Landyn Rider, 4th grader.
The class also includes lessons on cleaning up and at the end your painting is unveiled.
“They even amaze themselves because at the end … they don't realize … how much success they've had. They don't realize 'til the end. And at the end when they open their painting, they're like 'Oooh!' I did this,'” said Danelle Foster, Gouverneur Elementary art teacher.
The Elks Lodge provides the space for five days running. St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES helps with sponsoring - so does fundraising by the students themselves.
