Saturday Sports: Massena Girls Over I.H.C. In OvertimePosted: Updated:
A couple of Frontier League-Northern Athletic Conference meetings in girls' high school lacrosse Saturday as the Massena Lady Red Raiders made the trip down Route 37 to meet the I.H.C. Lady Cavaliers. I.H.C. gets on the board first as Tori LaDue splits the pipes. The Lady Cavaliers in front 1-0. Then it was Mady McElhearn going top shelf. Score: 2-0 I.H.C. Massena answers as Sofia Mitchell tickles twine, putting the Lady Red Raiders within 1. Aryssa Hopps ties the game at 2 and Massena beats I.H.C. 9-8 in overtime.
At Potsdam High School, the Lady Sandstoners welcomed Indian River for a Frontier League-N.A.C. contest. Daysia Wagner puts Potsdam up 8-7, but Abigail Smith answered for Indian River at the other end, tying the game at 8. Then it was Emily Trudeau with a wraparound. Score: 9-8 Indian River. Josie Brusso counters for Potsdam, tying the game at 9. Raven Marsell gives Indian River the lead back. The Lady Warriors beat Potsdam 17-13.
In girls' non-league lacrosse from Dexter, the General Brown Lady Lions entertained Westhill. Westhill scored quickly as Kendra McCall found the mark on the doorstep. Score: 1-0 Westhill. With the score 2-0, Caroline Miller scored off the free position. The Lady Lions fall to Westhill 13-11.
There was some opening round action in the Women's NCAA Division 3 Lacrosse Tournament as SUNY Canton met SUNY Brockport. Brockport would score 5 goals in the first 6 minutes to go up 5-0 in this contest. The Lady Roos break into the scoring column when Jessica Pele scores off the free position but SUNY Brockport would defeat SUNY Canton 16-3.
In Boys' N.A.C. Lacrosse, St. Lawrence Central hosted Canton at SUNY Potsdam. Aiden Knight scored for the Golden Bears and found the mark again, tying the game at 2. Matt Berg gave the Larries the lead back, denting net. Sean Hornung rips yarn, but Canton nips St. Lawrence Central 8-6.
The Clarkson Golden Knights needed one win today to win the Liberty League Championship against the University of Rochester. In game 1, top of the 8th, Clarkson was down 7-6. Tommy Bianchi reaches on a fielders choice and Joe Stockman scores, tying the game at 7. Clarksom loses game one 8-7.
In game two, Clarkson was down 5-1 in the 7th. Mike Tito doubles into the left field corner and Mike Messier scores to cut the Rochester lead to 5-2 but Rochester beats Clarkson 8-2 to win the Liberty League Title.
On the high school diamond, Potsdam hosted Norwood Norfolk. Syl Foisey reaches on an infield hit. Then it was Kellar McGowan with the perfect bunt, getting runners on the corners. Foisey comes home on the wild pitch to cut the Flyers lead to 2-1 but Norwood Norfolk beats Potsdam 3-2.
Potsdam hosted Lisbon in a 2nd game. It was Will Roda with a shot to right for a base hit, then it was Roda again, advancing to 2nd on a stolen base. It was Foisey with a sacrafice fly, plating Roda. Score: 3-0 Potsdam. The Sandstoners go on to beat Lisbon 5-2.
In Frontier League Softball from Belleville, the Lady Panthers hosted LaFargeville in a D Division battle. LaFargeville opens the scoring in the top of the 1st as Izzy Soluri hits a sacrifice fly to center field, plating a run. Score: 1-0 LaFargeville. Sarah Johnson solid on the hill for the Lady Red Knights, getting the strikeout to end the 1st. LaFargeville clinches the D Division Title as they beat Belleville Henderson 17-4.
