Company Proposes Solar Array On Watertown's Old Landfill

Posted: Updated:

Watertown city council members heard a pitch to go solar Monday night.

A company called Abundant Solar Energy wants to lease the old city landfill on Pearl Street for $70,000 a year and build solar arrays on it.

Company representatives told city officials it has four similar facilities up and running in the Rochester area.

"Watertown, you have a lovely large potential space on your landfill that is not being used for anything else," Abundant Solar Energy's Melissa Clark said. "We can actually produce power that can benefit not only the government, but also benefit the local subscribers."

Company officials say some city residents would be able to tap in.

The majority of council members told the developers they're interested, but need time to learn more.
