General Brown 7th grader is heading to national spelling bee
BROWNVILLE, New York (WWNY) - A General Brown 7th grader is making his 4th run at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Micah Sterling is 12 years old. He made his debut at the national spelling bee in 2022 when he was just 9, one of the youngest spellers there.
Last year, he tied for 22nd place in a competition against about 250 other students from across the country.
This year is the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee.
“I mostly study with my parents, sometimes with my friends. They’ve always supported me. The biggest thing is just not to stress. Just make the most of it. They can give you some tough words, but if you think it through, it’s not that bad,” said Sterling.
Micah says his favorite word is Wiesbaden, it’s a German city, and was the first confusing word he had to tackle.
The national spelling bee starts next Tuesday. Micah says he’s hoping to make the finals this year, they’re on Thursday night.
