Ohio woman celebrates 100th birthday surrounded by generations of family
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG/Gray News) - Letha McCoy’s birthday isn’t until May 6, but when you’re turning 100, one day of celebration just isn’t enough.
McCoy celebrated early, surrounded by generations of family members at a community center. Everyone came together to celebrate a life that has touched so many.
Just days away from turning 100 years old, McCoy is still doing things her way.
“What am I going to do? Same thing I been doing. Sit at home and watch TV, bake and cook,” McCoy said.
No big fuss; just the things she loves.
Born in Arkansas in 1926, McCoy was one of 14 children. She said growing up kept her busy.
“I grew up on a farm, and I didn’t like it. Too much work all the time,” McCoy said.
She made her way to Toledo in 1946, built a life, and had a 67-year marriage while raising eight boys. Now, that legacy fills up a room.
Celetha Chaney, her granddaughter, said McCoy has always been an example.
“Somebody who has literally always set an example not just for myself, but for everybody in my family,” Chaney said.
Bill McCoy, her youngest son, said she is still taking care of the family.
“She’s still washing clothes, still baking, still cooking for holidays, birthdays. She’s still baking cakes, people still calling her like she’s 35,” he said.
After decades of working in health care and even more years taking care of people she loves, McCoy hasn’t slowed down much. For those wondering how she does it, she has some advice.
“I tell the young people, ‘Just don’t let that hinder you. Just go ahead and do what you’re doing. Don’t get sidetracked by what the world is doing,’” McCoy said.
At 100 years strong, she is still leading by example.
McCoy’s family plans to celebrate her birthday again on May 6.
